Pantherettes Win Back-to-Back Championships
The Duncanville Pantherettes played a hard-fought battle against Cypress Ranch in San Antonio Saturday night to defend their State Championship title. The Pantherettes, used to dominating opponents and sealing an early win, suffered a six-minute scoring drought and other notable moments when the shots just didn’t fall.
"This was survival," Head Coach Cathy Self-Morgan said. "Our district set us up for this because I think we've got the toughest district in the state."
Zarielle Green scored 25 points – earning her second straight 6A State Championship MVP title. Aniya Thomas had 19 points including five 3-pointers and an injured Starr Jacobs added 17. The team’s defense, including a tenacious Nina Alvarez, played tough throughout the game. After three very competitive quarters, the Pantherettes finally pulled away in the fourth ensuring the 76-65 victory and back-to-back State Championships.
Self-Morgan said one of the challenges with this young team was keeping them focused.
“This group is very young and likes to have fun. They like to dance and mess around,” Self-Morgan said. With her steady hand at the helm, the Pantherettes brought their best to the championship game.
“Saturday they showed up focused … and showed maturity all day, and it was wonderful. They were amazing,” Self-Morgan said.
The 2017 Championship is the 10th state title for the Duncanville Pantherettes and marks Self-Morgan’s 1,100th career win.
