Olish Allen, a math teacher at Byrd Middle School, is the Made With Pride in Duncanville – Teacher honoree for the month of December. Mr. Allen loves math and he shares his love of math with his students daily. After school and on Saturdays, he teaches and re-teaches students who don’t quite get it during regular class time. Mr. Allen has been instrumental in getting our PBIS (Positive Behavior System) up and running. He mentors young men on our campus who need that male perspective when they have middle school issues. He is always a positive voice and force on campus. Mr. Allen represents the district’s core beliefs of collaboration and continuous improvement by being team leader of the math department and planning daily with the new math teachers on staff. He values each individual he encounters by assisting them when needed, offering words of encouragement and making them feel like part of our team. Mr. Allen personifies the best of Duncanville ISD on a daily basis and has been selected as the “Made With Pride in Duncanville – Teacher of the Month.”
Javier Canales, an ESL teacher’s aide at Duncanville High School, is the Made With Pride in Duncanville – Staff selection for the month of December. Mr. Canales is the only ESL aide at Duncanville High School. Even though there are 250 ELL students, Mr. Canales knows all of their names, faces, personalities, quirks and classes. Because of these positive and meaningful relationships, these students rely on him to achieve success. Oftentimes he is their voice when they are too scared to speak up. Mr. Canales works closely with all staff members (counselors, administration, and teachers) to ensure that each one of his students is successful. Mr. Canales does it all with a huge smile on his face. There is nothing that he wouldn’t do for his students. This commitment to valuing each individual is why Javier Canales was selected as the “Made With Pride in Duncanville – Staff of the Month.”
