Ms. Beverly Barron Barnes

I have been teaching most of my life. When I was preschool, my Mother taught me how to sew on buttons and fry eggs . In those days you did not attend Kindergarten so I was taught basic survival skills in the home. I loved learning to read as a small child and later went into Elementary education with a specialization in Academic Language Therapy. (DYSLEXIA therapy). I also majored in Vocational Home Economics and minored in Business Administration.

When in High school my favorite subjects were Homemaking, Art and Drivers Ed, which all prepared me for being a mother.

I have 4 children and 4 grandchildren who are my world.

I work with Dyslexic students privately and teach a special needs class at my church on Sunday.

I have taught for 26 years and have had a great 7 years working with the wonderful Duncanville students.

    Child Development-

     

    Child Development is a course that addresses technical knowledge and skills needed for success in the Human Services career cluster. Students will be expected to develop an understanding of child growth and development from prenatal through school age children, equipping students with child development skills. Students use these skills to promote the well- being and healthy development of children and investigate careers related to the care and education of children.

    FASHION DESIGN

     

    Fashion Design is a laboratory course that addresses technical knowledge and skills needed for success in the Arts, Audio/Video Technology, and Communications career cluster. Students will be expected to develop an understanding of fashion and the textile and apparel industries. Careers in fashion span all aspects of the textile and apparel industries. The student will learn to select proper care and maintenance practices for apparel and commercial care of clothing, as well as effectively manage the apparel dollar. Students will design apparel products using principles of effective design; analyze the apparel production process from design concept to finished product; and gain knowledge of fibers, fabrics and design when evaluating and designing textile products.

     

    Students will have projects that will count as major grades each 9 weeks. These grades will count as 40% of the total average. Minor grades will count as 60% of the total average. Students will produce a fashion design project each semester. Students will need approximately $50.00 in supplies throughout the year. Each student will need a sewing kit which includes a pin cushion, straight pins, seam ripper, sewing/hem gauge and scissors/shears. All projects involve hands-on assignments in class, which necessitates the student’s presence in class. Therefore it is imperative that students have regular attendance.

     

    Students will have projects that will count as major grades each unit. These grades will count as 40% of the total average. Minor grades will count as 60% of the total average..     Written assignments, which include a daily warm-up activity, are to be kept in a notebook. Write your name, subject and class block on the front with a permanent marker. Please have notebook, pen, pencil and colored pencils by September14th or 15th.

     

    Make up work will be allowed only if the student was absent from class. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate conversation about the missing assignments.

    Students who choose to not do the work during class will not be allowed to make up work.

    If student works during class and is still unable to complete the work will be allowed to turn the work in the next period at the beginning of the class.

     

    To help students be successful in this class the following guidelines are in effect:

    1. Be on time, prepared to learn.
    2. Respect yourself and others.
    3. Remain in your seat when the teacher or classmate is speaking.
    4. Turn in assignments on the appointed date.
    5. Take responsibility for your own actions.
    6. Show pride in your work and that of others.
    7. When working as a team, put forth team effort.
    8. Dress code will be enforced(Please refer to code of conduct)
    9. Phone will be placed in treasure box at beginning of class and will be removed at the end of class. It is recommended that all electronic devices be secured in back pack before entering class. If phone is visible in pocket or hand it will be taken up and placed in the box until the end of class. NO WARNING NEEDED
    10. NO FOOD OR DRINK
    11. All students will follow CHAMPS for each activity.

     

     

     

    Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a student leadership organization that is integrated into the curriculum. Students are encouraged to become affiliated members by paying $ 30.00 dues. This entitles you to full benefits of the organization such as participation in outings, STAR events, and other club-sponsored activities, including Community Service hours. It also is required for membership in the National Technical Honor Society. We strongly encourage all students to join and become involved in FCCLA and take advantage of opportunities and benefits inherent in student organizations. Students are also encouraged to participate in the fundraiser.
